Dr. Julius Richter was a painter, engraver, etcher, educator , and surgeon. He was born in Alleghany, Pennsylvania, but moved to Buffalo in 1880. He attended Central High School, part of the Buffalo public school system, and the College of Commerce. He graduated from the University at Buffalo with his doctorate in medicine in 1904. In the realm of arts, he studied under notable artists such as Volney Allen Richardson, Mildred C. Green, and Emile Gruppe.
Richter was a practicing surgeon for fifty years, maintaining an office on Main Street in Buffalo. He was a member of several professional medical organizations and was also a member of numerous artist organizations including the Buffalo Society of Artists, the Buffalo Print Club, and the American Physicians Art Association. He exhibited his paintings regularly in the American Physician’s Exhibition and with the Buffalo Society of Artists, where he won a medal in 1945. Richter also exhibited at the Albright Art Gallery in 1946 and won “Print of the Year” in 1950. He additionally served on the Council of the Buffalo Society of Artists.
