James D. Colby (born April 22, 1950) is an American photographer, curator, and cultural creative represented by the Joseph Bellows Gallery in La Jolla, California. He received an MFA from the University at Buffalo (UB), where he studied with Donald Blumberg, Alida Fish, Tyrone Georgiou, and Nathan Lyons of the UB/Visual Studies Workshop. (See https://www.422now.com/bio for details.)
About his Love Canal Series (1979-80), he said: "Our environment and its inhabitants are fragile and delicately balanced bodies which must be respected and preserved. If we want to live in harmony, we must not only condemn the careless handling of toxic wastes and other abusive capitalistic or industrialistic policies but more importantly, we must awaken a new sense of intelligence which is free from our past patterns of thinking and behaving. Obviously, we must begin to foster attitudes which encourage the reduction of consumption and waste. We must also realize that each physical and emotional gesture we make will eventually impact the future."
