Doretha Edwards is a contemporary visual artist and a native of Buffalo, NY. She studied graphic design at Daemen College and the Memphis Academy of Arts in Memphis, TN receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Returning to Buffalo she continued to explore the fine art aspects of her education and developed an interest in painting. She joined a local art group which allowed her a platform to exhibit her first set of paintings depicting family life and the inner-city community around her. Over the years she has not abandoned the familiar themes and continues to paint images that are often personal to how she sees the world. She notes in an artist statement, "I explore a variety of themes in my paintings with an urban voice, incorporating my love for portraiture with the use of solid colors and shapes."
Doretha has shown in various group exhibitions including the Carnegie Art Center's My Colors Our Truth, UB Center for the Arts, East Side Artists, Castellani Art Museum, 20/20 Vision, and Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, Artists Of Color. She also has had solo exhibitions at the Niagara Arts and Cultural Center, Portraits in Black and El Museo, Interpretations. Her artworks The Brothers and Faith appear in the movie The First Purge, filmed in Buffalo.
