Dean D. Spong

Dean D. Spong passed from this life at the age of 83 on Dec. 16, 2023 in Rancho Mirage, CA. Dean was born in Rochester, NY to Frederick Spong and Alice DeMarco Spong. He grew up in Rochester and nearby communities and graduated from West High School in Rochester.

Briefly leaving Rochester, he attended Michigan State University, receiving his degree in landscape architecture. Shortly thereafter, he became employed in the Monroe County Parks Department in Rochester, where he remained for his entire professional career. He progressively rose in the department, eventually becoming Director of the department for several years.

After retiring, Dean spent many enjoyable years with his partner and spouse, Allen Mardorf, first in Rochester and then in Rancho Mirage, CA. Having a passion for sculptural art, Dean particularly focused on collecting contemporary ceramic art. His collection grew over the years, eventually resulting in significant donations of ceramic works to the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo and later to the American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona, CA.

Dean was pre-deceased by his parents and brother, Fred. He is survived by his loving spouse, Allen, sister Marcia, brother Gary, several nieces and a nephew, other family members, and many wonderful friends.

Dean is remembered for his gentle sense of humor, his artistic vision, and his generous, compassionate personality. He will be greatly missed.
