Amanda Besl

Amanda Besl is a painter and arts educator who lives and works in Buffalo. She holds a B.F.A. in Fine Arts from SUNY Oswego (1998) and an M.F.A. in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan (2001). Besl’s oil paintings, often relatively small, feature rich color and textures. Throughout her career she has focused primarily on the inner worlds of adolescent girls, turning her attention first to documentary-style portraits of contemporary teenagers and more recently to still lifes informed by Greek mythology, Rococo painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and the Victorian-era preoccupation with women’s hair. Her work has been shown widely throughout Western New York and New York City, and in Belgium (Aeroplastics), France, Holland, and Russia. She has taught at Nichols School and SUNY Fredonia.
