A winter storm’s dynamism and unpredictability were key to the “feeling of continuous roar & clash–” captured here. “Chaos is let loose – Trees are angular huge fearful masses wind-torn – as if the earth were rising out of itself –,” Burchfield wrote. “Houses, snow-spattered, are remote & frightened — they are fragmentary for by peculiar lighting, sky & snow become one color — All the power of North is rushing thru the land –” Later in life he wrote, “North is an arbitrary term. It is the Pole that my imagination yearns for —”
