Inscribed on recto in pencil: “I was down here nearly all the time it was burning. Along the railroad near the fire, was a ditch about 2 ft wide full of icy water. Well, everyone, with a few exceptions, fell in. Two girls went [nearly] out of eight. Miss Hoffstot and Miss Platt, both schoolteachers fell in. I also, of course, followed the rest.”
Verso: Postmarked Salem, Ohio, November 23, 1908
Inscribed in pencil: “Hello, happy Thanksgiving, Arthur / S. H. S. football team won at [Massillon] 18-0. They’ve only lost one game this year and that to Lisbon. The boys of our Sunday School class have formed a club. It is the Knights of King Arthur a national organization I have the distinguished honor of being one of the chancellors. Ralph Deemer is King. We haven’t got a good start yet, but it’s going to be candy. [sic] / Nun, Glück Auf. / Karl Burchfield”
