Return of the Sun was captured in southwestern Kentucky during the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. Taken without a filter in front of the telescope, this photograph of the burst of first light shows the expansive tendrils of the sun’s corona and the “diamond ring” effect as brilliant sunlight returns from behind the moon after the end of totality.
