Burchfield had tentative plans to expand Wheatfield and Tower to incorporate more landscape elements. He thought he might add “The Three Trees” with “great patches of brilliant golden sunshine” on the left, “Elder bushes in bloom” on the right, and the “Rich deep lushness of June grass at evening” in the foreground. He graduated from Salem High School as class valedictorian in 1911; the school’s turreted tower is highlighted in painting.
