evening lunch & spend the evening. To route 98, north on it to North Java, then east toward Wethersfield Springs. Parked on a high rise, facing east, overlooking a wide valley.A pleasant hour, watching the sun’s declining light. At sundown a wood thrush song from a nearby woods. Later I explored the woods a swampy dense growth of young trees. At its southwestern edge I came out upon a charming opening, overlooking a wide low swampy tract, with rolling fields & hills beyond.I had looked for the moon to rise as soon as the sun set but it was not until I was well on the way home that it finally rose. It was good to get home. ; ; ; ; ___________One day last week I went down to Rock City to refresh my mind with the rocks & sunlight (hoping I might get to work on the large Peterbird [sic] picture.) The place did not have the interest for me as it did last year. The rocks were somewhat hidden by foliage, and then it is being commercialized—someone has bought it & charges admission to sightseers (so two small boys, to whom I gave a lift from Olean, told me). The major rocks must have names—“The Three Sisters, The Sentinel, The Pulpit, etc.” I found some odd plants, several of which I dug up. (Later determined they were clintonia)
