Early evening B & I for walk about town. Meet Hank & M with Peggy—Sally calls—wondered if we had our old refrigerator yet—(alas we had given it to the Good-will) we felt bad about it. Red has a job in Waterville on his graduation & they have an apt. but no refrigerator).Evening—reading extracts of my high school diary to B—May 2—(Mon.)Dream Fragment—In Salem—High Street—great open fields with gigantic trees, elms, buttonwoods and maples, with blue-jays flying about—It seemed as if someone on the excuse that the trees were a menace to surrounding houses had cut off the upper branches much to my disgust. The “scars” where even the highest branch were cut off, were as big as ordinary stumps.May 4 (Wed.)—To the country south of Wethersfield Springs (via Cowlesville & Attica) painting.A sultry, windy day—altho it is so dry the country nevertheless has the fresh delicate spring look.A short distance past Wethersfield Springs I saw a small tree with red bloom on it and stopped to investigate. In this manner I discovered a beautiful spot: Swamp & pasture and with many hemlocks and elms. A large hemlock by the road suggested an ideal spot to eat my lunch.
