Left at late afternoon—drove around in Gowanda then home by the Genesee Road Route & Marshfield Rd (Interesting wooded hill just west of 18A) & 18A to Hamburg. Planted the flowers after supper as the sun was setting. Evening tired but a game of cards.April 23 (Sat.)All day on “Hemlock Woods”—my chief interest and pleasure was putting in the dead leaves in the foreground. As soon as all the additions are filled in, new problems arise. Apr. 24—Late P.M. B & I to Rochester—The country looked lovely in the declining sunlight (growing more & more golden to deep burnt orange vermilion).Arrive at Sheraton Hotel about 8:30. Our room on the 9th floor, large and with twin beds.We went for a short walk & then to bed. Apr. 25—Difficulty in getting any sleep—we could not get the room cooled off enough.—A long tiresome job, receiving some 1200 entries to less than 200. The other jurors—Robert Tyler Davis (now with the Montreal Museum) & Paul Parker.Lunch at some club. Cocktails at the Cunny house, then to the home of Dr. & Mrs. Siegel for dinner.
