Crocuses out in great profusion.Disturbing letter from W.S Jackson, Adv. Mgr, for C & O R.R.—He said the seams on my “Appalachian Evening” were “showing badly”—He suggested its return & a new picture on a single sheet of paper. He said it had been scuffed in handling & he was having minor repairs done be a Cleveland restorer. Incensed at apparently careless treatment, I spent the day composing a 4 page reply. March 29 (Tuesday)Day spent in making box & packing 10 water colors for the K.C. Inst. Show. Hank came down after supper and helped me (Without him I never could have done it. Finished by 8:15—all three boxes packed. March 30, (Wed.)Gray, cloudy, a chill wind from the east. Steffenhagen takes boxes to express office.Kill-deer—grackles are back; white-throated sparrows. About March 5, an offer from Univ. Of Minn. To teach a summer class—1st session for $1000—six weeks. I felt no inclination toward it, and on F.R.’s advice (while in N.Y. I declined). On evening of the day I returned (Sunday March 14) a telephone call.
