Dec. 25, 1948 to Jan 20, 1949; Days of confusion, doubt, studio problems, financial worries—it all seems best to be forgotten.; Jan. 11—Emma died—B & I to funeral (Jan. 13); Jan. 20, 1949 (Thurs); B & I to Utica for Jury duty—a cold but sunny day, good driving conditions.; Stop to see Sally—(Red has just left for Syracuse where he works in a Steel mill 4 to 12 & we missed him) Sally said she was pregnant again, and wondered if we thought she was crazy for being happy over it. The both are pleased and so are we. ; The whole visit in Utica very pleasant and stimulating we had a room at the Utica Hotel, where the first evening we had dinner with Harris Prior (director of the Institute) and one of the Jurors, Jerry Dodge, curator of the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, N.Y. happy to see my Sphynx [sic] & Milky Way hanging in the hall.; Jury meeting the next day—the other juror, Paul Parker, formerly director of the DeMoines [sic] Art Gallery, now visiting art instructor at Hamilton College. Our job not an arduous one, only 300 entries of which we accepted a little less than 100. (The “dentist picture”); Lunch at Fort Schuyler Club—A tea at the Institute for Trustees & Jury to meet, then dinner at Fort Schuyler Club.
