{Left 166 & took 66} Bypassed Springfield Missouri.; 279 mi. – Lunch by the roadside 1:00. Canned Roast Beef sandwiches, fresh tomatoes Virginia’s pickles (which were super-delicious). Coffee from hot water in bottle filled at Cabin in morning.; By a woods – I gathered some odd weeds here and some acorns. Grasshoppers lively & singing, and some katydids. Just as I was about to get in the car, discovered a walking-stick on my coat. He was about 4 inches long, grayish & very like a dead twig. I shook him off with difficulty. ; As the day wore on, we got more and more weary, and Scott Field seemed very far away. Had we not written Art to expect us on this day, it is probable that we would have stopped west of St. Louis [overnight]. However we felt the need of pushing on.; Road signs advertising caves Onondaga & Merrimec [sic] – we discussed visiting them but felt we hadn’t the time.; West of St. Louis, at twilight – High cliffs by the road with caves. We stopped an explored one – very imposing and mysterious – one passage way in shadow I could not determine whether it went on, or was just seemed to on account of the darkness. – The oval shaped patch in the “ceiling”.; It was dark when we reached the outskirts of St. Louis.
