to get a closer view. The sign on a house “Bad Dogs” – The great piles, some with [trestles], thin sides furrowed by rains, fantastically beautiful with the light of the setting sun on them. (The sunned parts rosy, the shadow cold blue violet on steel-blue). 5:20. 169 mi. Enter Missouri – 5:45.179 mi. East of Joplin – cabins – the best we so far had found – built of stucco, & with a drive-in shelter for the car right of the cabin door. – A refrigerator full of ice for our use in the center. ; ; ; ; ; Tuesday Oct. 19 –; Up fairly early. Bright – chilly on my way. ; Wonderful colored grasses & red and pink earth – we stopped for a few rocks, but it was the earth & not the rocks that had the color. ; Later we stopped to look at some especially deep red brown or plum colored earth. Hardly had we started to examine it when a man came along, stopped and approached us – “Interested in getting some stones?” – He proved to be a dealer or contractor, supplying stone for roads, public buildings and private homes. He was quite wrapped up in his subject & it was sufficient to get away from him. He suggested we make a detour of 50 miles into Arkansas to visit the “Shepherd of the Hills” country (which we did not do). 235 mi. – getting gas east of Mt. Vernon – 11:00.
