artist and retired art teacher. A little white-haired lady with a lot of charm. The walls of her house were literally covered with her paintings, made in all parts of the world. They had the charm that all travel sketches have, if reasonably well done. From the living room we drifted to other rooms, attracted in particular by a beautiful Victorian bedstead. She had many mementoes of that period. She told an amusing story of how, when her parents died she, in order to get rid of them some furniture quickly, sold some lovely dining chairs to a second hand dealer for 5 ¢! She had one of the chairs left. ; Evening – to Arkansas City (“Ark City”) with M.A. & LaVera ate at Purity Cafe (a too white and too brightly lighted place. We had steaks which were only 50-50 in quality) Back to Hotel & gabbed awhile. Took girls home about 11:00.Sunday – Oct. 17 –Very cold and clear. ; Up at 8:00 – Breakfast at the Harbour – D. wrote letters and mailed them on way to M.A.’s Church Service. (Home-coming Festival for the Lutheran Children’s Aid) in St. John’s College Chapel (as we approached the chapel, the “Home” children were just arriving. It was heartening to hear them crying with obvious love & enthusiasm “Hello, Mary Alice – Hello, Mary Alice” –) Met Rev. Widiger, Dr. Wente (and after the service Mrs. Wente who was organist)—and LaVera’s folks.; To the home for lunch – Standing in line – The couple
