A seemingly long drive after dark over strange winding roads; and what seemed like a great dam. 409 mi — Fourman’s [sic] — overnight— Corner room with twin beds. Hardly had we landed when two young fellows came in. One came to the door and wanted to know if we could give them a lift to Indianapolis in the morning. As we had our back seat full of clothes & luggage we had to refuse. —A restless night - I had driven too far, eaten when too tired — I could not relax — my stomach seemed to contained (sic) a huge spring too tightly wound. An airplane beacon that periodically sent a flash of light into the room. Not until after midnight did I begin to relax. In the morning B said my snoring drove her frantic. On the whole, a discouraging night and we both dreaded the balance of the trip.– Tuesday (Oct. 12)Left at 9:00. Clear and cold. [Fourman’s Cabins just east of Arlington — Arlington 96 miles from Indianapolis & 336 to St Louis] Wonderful cornfields — gigantic shocks.Breakfast at “Johnny’s” on a corner crossroad. Meadowlarks. The farmer & his boy. He said the best corn crop in history. Asked the price of apples in Buffalo.B – drove 50 miles to city limits}435 mi. – Richmond, Ind. City of beautiful trees.485 “– Indianapolis city limits – stopped to fix rattles in car in front of a Lutheran Child Welfare.
