(Sept. 10 – Cont.)Evening – B & I to Century to see “Good Sam” (Gary Cooper & Ann Sheridan) – Good fun mostly but some moments of bad taste (the spoofing of the Salvation Army for one) – was this a gentle satire on “Uncle Sam” & his lend-lease and E.R.P. etc? Sept. 11 (Sat.) Noon – a call from F.R. at Magnolia. The Utica Institute wants to purchase my “Sphynx [sic] & Milky Way” for $2500. As he had wanted 3000 he called to see if I would agree to this 2500 – which I felt I must do regardless. It gives me pleasure on all accounts – we need the money, and it is one of the most fantastic of the fantasies which I feared might not find purchasers. P.M. Rev. Neeb in withEvening – Baby sitting – Hank & Mart to Seneca. Rev. Neeb in with some tomatoes & peppers. Carol fell in love with the baby and insisted on holding it awhile altho her father was anxious to move on. Sept. 12 – (Sun.) Evening – to bed early – listen to program of music from Canada – Piano violin Concerto of Bruch (played by Menuhin) very good – Same 3 songs by Ravel about Don Quixote, & a song by DuParc. – then the Prelude “Love-Death” of Wagner. Concerning the latter – when it was played the other day I asked B – “How does that music strike you” – “Why, it’s pleasant enough music” – “Are you forgetting that a lady is dying in a love-passion over the dead body of her lover?” “It doesn’t sound sad to me, it just sounds like music you listen to when you are doing something else, such as ironing etc.” – which about covers it. Even If the hearer was not prepared be-
