Finally to gallery at 10:30. The pictures look well to me, and are beautifully hung.; About 11:00 Frank in, & after our greeting was over, the visit is well launched.; A pleasant three days—the reviews (Herald—Tribune—World American, Times) all favorable; many people in, and most of them enthusiastic. I felt that all the work & expense were justified. A Dr. & Mrs. Brown in, & bought the “Early December Snow”—; Charlie & Florence K. in—C’s appearance a shock—F confided to me that he has leukemia—it was dreadful seeing & talking to him knowing he could not long survive, and feeling sure he knew it too.; Dinner nom. PM at F & M’s apt. Ges-Olds also.; Tues. Nom. Mrs. B—in—she & I lunch together at Mario’s (F refused to go, as M was so jealous of her)—at lunch Mrs. B. proved she was consistently a gossip & trouble-maker—the less said the better.); Tues. Evening—F-M & I to Village for dinner—then to see a Swedish Film (“Girls from?” (some province in Sweden)) with captions in English—A very entertaining film—wholesomely unlike the artificial glamour of Hollywood—A feeling of a folk-art. A travelogue film preceded it, and the patter for it, (which she could understand) so enraged M—that she left & did not return). ; Among visitors Wed. were Mangonite (who had the misfortune of having his barn (struck by lightning) burn down, and part of his studio—this summer—John Carroll, & Norman Kent.; Dinner with F & M at their apt. Curried chicken. To movie afterward “Kilroy was here” with Jackie Cooper & Jackie Coogan—then to train.; ; ; ; ; Oct. 16—; Met by Art at train—good to be home—; ; ; ; ; Oct. 16—19—; Sally’s visit.
