put on my boots; too deep where we were, I headed up stream, crossing a small tributary stream, and entered a dark hemlock woods. Here I saw more of the “strange” white flowers and they turned out to be merely old fallen rhododendron blossoms. (We had seen many laurel & rhododendron bushes all along here). But what attracted me were the great quantity and infinite variety of mushrooms, beautiful and fantastic and of almost every color, except of course green & blue. I told B I had found “mushroom heaven” and insisted she come and see. (By placing stones strategically, she was able to get across with only rubbers on.) We spent a pleasant half hour here examining & exclaiming over each new “find” – It was like a fairy woods.; ; ; ; ___________________________; Evening—B—MA & I to Strand to see “The Yearling”—B’s & my second viewing. I liked it even better than the first time. Some of the things (such as the background music) annoyed me less this time.July 26 (Sat.)—; Planted the orchids under the maple leafed ash. First I dug out all the day-lilies that were there and never bloomed because of the shade. I cleared a place in the back field below the winter onions and got Art to dig up a plot, and put in some of the lilies here. Also weeded and cut some of the weeds around the hollyhocks and roses.
