A brief visit—then to Emma’s—we found her looking better & in better spirits than we expected. After a short visit, to Herman’s Garage to get car (the men not back & supper so we went to their house). Car needed some getting ready but soon Art was driving away in it. After another visit at Emma & Ethel’s (where we arranged for paying for car). Back to Mary & Dick’s for the night. A bad night’s sleep. Early morning blue-jays strange “squeaky pump” call. Red bird. Mary & Dick had to leave early for church, so we left at same time. Return trip uneventful—except to [sic] two slight mishaps to Art’s car. First south of Ashtabula the fan ran dry & stuck & we had to push him to Ashtabula to a garage. Second at Irving, his tin valve blew out. We had a good meal at Waite’s Restaurant a few miles east of Erie. The trip was somewhat of a strain as it was necessary always to keep an eye on Art, who followed us. We were glad to get home. Art, tired as he was, had to take his car out to show his friends.June—9—12— Days of “marking time” anticipating the trip to Valpo.Thurs, 12th—Working in studio, but stale—also in yard.
