B & C were inadequately protected & soon had wet feet—we found but one orchard plant, no flowers—; May 28 (Tues.) Wed.— Another day of indecisions & inability to paint. Mounted foam boards preparatory to remounting the 1932 “Portraits of Sally, Martha & Catherine—and also a new version of “Solitude”— Sifted some ashes for fixing holes in drive—but rain stopped me. Evening B & I to Maxine to see “Lady in the Lake” This is the one in which the movie audience is supposed to be seeing the picture thru Rob’t Montgomery’s eyes. Not only did it fail in creating that illusion, but it was very annoying and nerve wracking in the bargain. May 29 (Thurs.)— Letter from Joe. He & Ruth are spending the week-end at Cayuga Lake & intend stopping off here on the return (Monday). B—M & I to Loblaws marketing—warm & sunny when we went in but a very short & violent storm came up while we were inside. Blew down branches some of which damaged cars parked there. Raining most of morning—Played Beethoven’s Quintet #15 (132)—The third movement is almost incredible in its atmosphere of religious feeling. A monologue addressed to God. Evening call Em about her car, which Art plans to buy. May 30—(Dec. Day) Parade & Dec. Day services at our little “Park” Very cold. But sunshine & wind—Mart and Hank left 1:00 to visit Sally & Red.
