Toscanini played Haydn’s London Symphony #104 a beautifully simple thing— About 6:00—B & I to Strand to see “Return of Monte Cristo” (a modernization of the original story, but very interesting nonetheless) and “Lone Wolf in Mexico”— C had asked us to call for her—but when we did, she said she wanted to go to a show. B&I home, and after a lunch—to bed. Apr. 14 (Mon.) A cool partly sun-lit day. In studio— Made tentative drawing of enlargement of the 1917 “New Albany” sketch. It fills me with joy—it will be a great subject. Played the Sibelius Fourth. Evening—made some poached corn, & took some of it to Hank’s & Mart’s. Hank was at a “Father-Son” supper at the Lutheran church Cathie was there having had supper with Mart. On the way home met Hank & his father, Mr. Luck. Apr. 15 (Tues.)— Out painting. Altho it is a fine day, cool & sunny, I cannot get into the mood for painting. Having in mind a special idea, I cannot find the right scene as a vehicle for carrying it out. Stop just north of Springville to make studies of cottonwood in bloom for “Swamp-Fire”—Discover here that I had forgotten water. Stop at Hardware in Springville for two maple syrup cans & fill them with water there.
