stream in the valley—crows. On the drive homeward saw first one (male) bluebird fly in front of the car, and again a pair fly across the road, and into an apple tree so that their color was plainly seen. Some pussy willows on Sibley Rd. Redwings.

Decided today with some misgivings to join the Artists Equity Association. Apr. 9, 1947—(Wed.) Mart & Hank down in evening. Mart had made me a very attractive little picture of the view on N. Ave from [CD] with the moon high in the sky, as a greeting, and they also gave me $5.00 for a set of records. Played cards until Cathie came in; she bought ice-cream and a set of records for me—Samuel Barber’s First Symphony.

Worked on the preliminary plans for a rain-shelter for sketching. Apr. 10 (Thurs.) A mild day—sunny and clean early, becoming misty and more cloudy as the day progressed. Was much amused the antics of two male song sparrows. One of them wanted to do nothing but sing, but the other, jealous, always chased him away. The singer would only fly a short distance, and at once start to sing but scarcely could he get a few notes out before the other would fly at him in a rage.
