Apr. 5—(Saturday)— Heavy rains. Wonderfully mild air—the whole earth *one flash of lightning—thunder—a fine pummel sand—opening up—the creek smaller with swirling ochre water. Robins. The area around the studio flooded. The first real impact of spring. The old agony returns (If it should fail to come I would be dead). A.M. M.A. & Ellen in studio looking at pictures play Vaughn-Williams 5th Symphony—a truly noble creation. Early P.M. play “Snowy Lair” & “Steal Away” with door open. Later—B & I to city line shopping— Sun comes out—warm, the earth reeking with odors, Robins scolding and calling. *Mourning Dove calls from the pines. Apr. 6 (Easter) A brisk sunshiny day—cooler, windy. All of us to church which is crowded. Apr. 7 Colder, sky overcast, a few hard grains of snow—M.A. & Ellen off early to Valpo. Up late (about 11:00) All of us (with Eddie P.) to Great Lakes to see Bob Hope in “My favorite blond”—very amusing. Apr. 8—(Tues.) First downy bud of hepatica (back of garage)—The vermillion cup fungus has started to grow—(4 or 5 small ones). Spring beauties in bud.
