N.Y. Trip—Mar 16—22 To N.Y. night of Mar. 16— Mar. 17—Arriving at hotel—unable to take possession for several hours—as it is later at once to dining room. A barren place, service is poor, food is not much better, and yet for a simple breakfast I am charged 1.75! Try without avail to get room for Martha, for Tues. or Wed. night. Arrive at Guggenheim meeting (held at 14 Moylen Pl. 125th St & Amsterdam Ave. as two years ago) to find I am last one there except for Fraser. I was pleased to see that F. Watkins was on the jury—he was taking Gifford Beal’s place—Beal declined on account of his eyes—(I was sorry not to see Beal it was only that I welcomed the chance to talk to Watkins about the gallery). I mentioned it to him during a momentary lull, and he too wanted to discuss it with me. The Jury duty was not so interesting this year, or perhaps it was because I did not was worried about the gallery. On both days we lunched at a place on Amsterdam Avenue, several blocks down. During the morning (Monday) I called the hotel and secured the promise of a room for Martha on Wed. Eve.). Mon. evening—First to Hotel to check into my room and verify M’s reservation—Then to gallery, whence patrons had preceded me—I took the pictures along. F had to open it up and look at a few—he was enthusiastic, as was Watkins. All of us, with Margaretta, to dinner at Pierre’s—very gay—after wards [sic] to lunch F’s apartment for a chat. Watkins & I discuss the gallery afterwards. He said he felt that in case of a “Vacuum” occurring—i.e. that the gallery should for any reason cease to exist, that there would be something to fill that vacuum.
