Feb. 23—(1947)—Sun. Almost a blizzard—High wind and drifting snow altho [sic] the sun shines thru the clouds at times.; In spite of it, we went to church as usual and enjoyed the excitement of the weather. P.M. After dinner—letter to Louise & Phil. Concert. 5:00—Toscanini concert—Schubert’s C major symphony—what a powerful joyous expression—it is like a great natural force; the last movement like some huge dynamo with its swelling heart-like ‘pulse,’ or like a flood [CD] sweeping all aside in its power. Surely this symphony can stand with the Beethoven Symphonies & not be ashamed! Evening—B bakes some rolls & I make pop-corn. Invite Mart and Hank down to share them—a game of rummy, with much horse play and laughter.

Thurs. night (Feb. 20)—to Albright Gallery reception for the W.N.Y. show jury (Mrs. Fonce, Eugene and David Smith [sculptor])—an interesting affair. It was good to see Mrs. Fonce again.Friday (Feb. 21)—up early and to Statler to pick up Mrs. Fonce and brought her out for visit to studio. Showed her my latest things (last Summer & Fall) & she liked some very much. Her visit did me good—she said I was right to live far from New York where she said a mood of deep pessimism was so prevalent—we discussed the gallery situation and she
