Memories of the Detroit trip—
The sunsets to the northwest, how late into the night they tarried. On the second night it was impossible to till when the last afterglow was replaced by the glow above the lit up city of Detroit—The furnace glow from Cleveland—
On the second night long bars of dark clouds across the northern sky—
Most glorious of all the Milky Way, brilliant and clear in its entirety—nothing but the star-studded Milky Way, the water & the vault of the sky—
The mystery of North, with only the limitless water on all directions, and the sky—
The gulls on the second morning, following the ship like a convoy—heading into the wind, able without effort to keep up with the speed of the ship without flapping their wings.
Sunrise out of the water.

Detroit itself a disappointment—hot & uninteresting—Gratiot Ave. (which every one called Grashit)—to top of bldg. To an amusement park, where I foolishly went on the roller coaster and found out I was too old for it. We were glad to get back to the boat. We had a lot of fun out of Gratiot Ave. and asking policemen for directions
