simply “The Little Beaver” – what a host of memories are evoked by the very mention of the name that winding stream- what agonized yearnings! On my recent trip to New York, I bought the “Moldau” by Smetena. He loved his river in the same way.

{The occasion of my trip to New York, was of course the Guggenheim Jury, I enjoyed it in a way, but somewhat less so than other years. There were fewer applications, with reduced quality- perhaps we are all a little tired and oppressed by the interminable war. I did not get some stimulation from the other jurors as formally with his pugnacity (half real, half assumed) and endless reiteration of maximus (“anyone can have talent at 25, the thing is to have it at 50”) has worn rather thin. Probably it is time we changed our jury. }
Frank seemed happier even than usual to see me, and I him. I spent several evenings with him & Geo. Olds. I did little else. What shows there were did not interest me, and even had I wanted to go, the war boom has made scalpers’ prices all out of reason. I spent a pleasant afternoon in the gramophone shop. Besides the Moldau, I bought a quintet opus 97, of Dvorak. (it has great beauty, but does not equal the “Dumky” trio.)
Besides the “Rimsky” book, I also bought a book on “Dvorak”
