July 9, 1943 – (Fri.)
P.M. Out painting on Manilla Road (358) – Martha & Catherine along. We stopped at Borden Rd and Transit Rd where Martha wanted to make a few studies. Thru Blossom – Bathers at the Dam.
Thru Lancaster, and Pavement to Ellicott Road. Stopped to enter an elm grove for a few minutes. Thence by various turns to the Manilla Road. I find a subject under a low-hanging maple – A hot close day, but it is delightful under the tree. M & C for walk while I paint – work until almost six, then home.
July 14. (Wed).
Art & Mart to Ohio to spend time at Walter & Helen’s –
July 16 –
To Lancaster country – making studies for Wheatfield picture –
Lunch under some maples, on Clinton Road near Cowlsville a clear brilliant noon – Herd of cattle browsing under trees. After lunch a few studies of original Wheatfield scene, then West on Bullin Rd – A watercolor of sun shining on road.
July 17 –
First Cicada – First singing grasshoppers on Union Rd near P.R.R. –
Packed radios and some records and shipped to M.A.
