the great quantities of dog-toothed violets.
Then to a swampy woods west of Orchard Park. (I forgot to mention that I had stopped here earlier in the day, looking for hepaticas to make a painting of. – The hepaticas, however, in the woods, are long past their prime). This is a delightful place, with places, and little pools of clear, but brownish water, teeming with life. A few studies of water-striders.
Then home.

P.M. B & I to Chestnut Ridge. Exploring Ravines – a delightful excursion – the ravines full of many beauties. Once we saw a “blue” butterfly –

On Ravines #1 – putting in hepaticas –
Letter from F.R. with check, and news that “Snow in April” had sold for $800. Another letter in evening saying that Mark Reed (who had purchased “Nov. Bloom” several years ago, wanted to buy “Sunrise in the Forest” (1917) for $500 – and was disposed to do so. (Agreeable to me)
May 7 –
A.M. to Buffalo – to Bank – To Hagen’s – To J.N. Adams to see young McPherson’s show – Then to Market and then home by noon –
P.M. work on Ravines # 1 – putting in poplar tree to left.
