I went back to the Park, where curiously the “hand of man” is felt less. Here I found a subject looking down a ravine, and painted all afternoon.
April 9 – Friday –
My 50th Birthday – I ought to feel it some sort of milestone, but do not –
At breakfast a card from Sally at my place, with two packs of pepsin gum – the card, almost a “book”, very clever word with a sentiment that brought tears to my eyes.
In the evening nice cards from Evie & Cathie, and a card from Martha she had made herself, shining a little wood-land scene, with my favorite flower, hepaticas. Also, a nice wool tie. Earlier, I had chosen for myself two sets of records. The Dvorak Fifth & the Sibelius Seventh Symphonies to be a gift from the family.
A roast ham dinner –
P.M. Young Edward Hudspith (nephew of J.J.S.) who is home from the army on a furlough, out for a visit. He is an agreeable person, and I enjoyed him.

In the evening B & I to see “Desperadoes” –
