with raindrops. The roar of wind thru the upper rafters of the woods – a fine elemental sound.
I found budding hepaticas and spring–beauties, and dug a few to take home.
Drive on a short distance trying to find some place where I could paint protected from the wind and rain. Stop at a point where there is a fine view over the “Boston” Valley. The distant since smoky blue-gray in the veil of falling rain, & the newer trees, on this side of the valley, rich purplish brown, with a row of wet catalpas in front, all wet, and gleaming rich orange & yellow.
To Chestnut Ridge Park – (thinking I might find a subject to paint from one of the shelters) * – A brief excursion into the main ravine – then to eastern part. I stood in the protection of one of the picnic shelters, and watched the swaying of the trees in the wind for a long time. Eventually I thought I could express this “rocking” sensation in a picture, and made the attempt, but it was a failure –

Home at six, feeling somewhat dejected over my failure to paint; but probably the day’s impressions will come back to me some day in a memory, and be more valuable than something done at the moment. So I salve my conscience!
