To “Elma Nurseries” painting.
A fine Monday – a cool breeze, but the sun warm. Before lunch – sketches of young saplings in nurseries as material for study (begun in 1933 – of Lehde’s nurseries.) – The sounds of early Spring – the growing call of blue buds (but see none – never have I first “seen” a blue bud, always it is the elusive wind-worn call from far away–) Crows – chickadees –
Lunch on Bullis road by open fields – the sun strong, the air warm and drowsy – the buzz of a fly at times – after eating a walk southwards across the watery changing fields – Then back to nurseries – a brief impulse to paint some tall black trees – even set up easel – but it passes – then across on the other side of road – the blue distance between rows of slender poplar saplings attracts me, and I am soon at work. All afternoon at it – Probably the result was negligible, but at least I enjoyed the day – the
