101. lady evidently his wife, tho I was sure he had been married to someone else. He did not introduce me, seemed to assume I knew her.
Coming from the court-house, I met Joe Berlin. We chatted awhile. Then to (CD), + watch-repairer, and then by bus home.
Evening - played Schubert Symphony No. 9.[i]

A.M. In studio, studying some of my pictures, in particular the one I did on the 15th - I think I solved the sky (with suggestions in chalk and charcoal, to be carried out later) - But principally the one of The Great Hill - " which I was afraid I might not get at, this year. In spite of the unusually cold nights, the brilliant sunshine of late August seems just right in this picture.
P.M. Walk over to Union Road to Penna. R.R. Bridge - The sky flecked with scattered small cumulus clouds, clear against the sky, except those just under the sun. From them, streamers of whitish mist, shot with the sun's rays, extended downwards to the horizon, which was steaming white.
At the bridge, I looked at the busy railroad activities almost with a sensuous pleasure. I felt the need of drinking in thrumy eyes the soot and smoke-blackened surfaces; the coal-dust filmed earth, the gleaming rails, the sturdy grimy men; even the bitter, acrid odor of the hot gray violet smoke was far from dis-
