Second Guggenheim meeting.
Awards (7) to five painter and two sculptors. Mitchell was left out, + I could not quarrel with the decision. I felt he would have done much better had he stayed home, instead of going across the continent as he did.
We had difficulty in numbering the last from – Booth, Kingman (a Chinese boy) Fawcett + Perk (from Cleveland). Beal did not show up, (because of his son’s illness). And I the lone painter had difficulty to keep the two sculptors from painting Crumbo (an Indian who did flat decorations somewhat in the the (sic) manner of tepee painting), on a preferred list (Later, when we showed the results to Beal, he (Beal), argued heartily with my stand.

P.M. – To “Living American Art” to see proofs. They were excellent, and I only had a few minor corrections to suggest – However a difficulty came up. Boni said he was putting these prints out as “originals” made by the individual artists – and News week wanted to make some photographs of actual work being done on the screen – would I pose – not having time to think it thru, I half-heartedly relented.
Later in talking it over with Frank, he felt very strongly it was unethical, and that I should not go thru with it– The next morning I had a difficult ten minutes with Boni, but he finally gave up.
