On the return we stopped at “lace-gable” house, white, set in among great Norway pines – it was empty – beautiful grounds. From Hamilton we went back by way of Niagara Falls and then followed the river road to the Peace bridge, eating our supper by the stream. ; The impression of this trip was all but obliterated by another trip we took to State College, Pa. (May 31-June 2) to visit the Wilds – a sudden unpremeditated trip, precipitated by a letter from Carl Wild urging us to come. It was an enjoyable trip, but our record thoughts on returning home, were that we should not have imposed our whole family on them. ; (Henry Poor at work on his mural at the college. To surprise him, I, without warning, made a typically stupid remark (such as people make to an artist at work) he turned but did not recognize me, nor did until I made a second remark bringing F.R.’s name in). Carl had him with his daughter Anna, who is assisting him, and another young lady Saturday Evening. ; Poor is likewise shattered by the war, but congratulates himself on having a mural to execute – which he regards as more or less mechanical, the creative work being already done, I envied him. ; My friendship with X--- has always been of an indefinite nature, but on this trip, he definitely passed out of my path. We will meet again to be sure, and be polite and exchange views, but I know that he & I do not inhabit the
