denunciation of everything, seemed more human as time went on, and his bluffness more of a defense than anything else. I ended by liking him.; Fraser, I liked and respected at once, a feeling that did not change.; We lunched at Rubens, – enjoyable chatty affairs.; Evenings I spent mostly with Frank – and the extra days at the gallery, going over some of my last summer’s work. (I was pleasantly surprised to see how well they were – I was on the track of something new then) I realized too, that it is imperative for me to do some longer more thoughtful pictures.–––Mar. 19 – Tuesday –; P.M. all of us to see “Grapes of Wrath” – a well done picture, but it beat incessantly on one note – even the truth of monotonously repeated becomes boring. As one disaster after another overtakes the good family, you begin to wonder “How soon will it end” – This, what is no doubt a tragic notion, becomes merely imitating. In review, It is good documentation, but not great art. Mon. 22 (Friday) – ; The winter weather continues unabated – Short blizzards and matches of sunlight all day –; Noon – Good Friday service at E. Armory. More wintry in the country – great miles of snow and drifts along the wood.
