show; and he was enclosing a clipping of Jewell’s review from the Nov. 21, Times (but he failed to enclose it). So B & I to Buffalo after supper to get one. The criticism was excellent, and set my mind at rest, for I realized that all along, I subconsciously had wondered how an exhibition of my early things, out of a clear sky, would be received.; ; ; ; Nov. 23 – 1939; A great day –; A.M. to Church –; The Thanksgiving Dinner – (we all decided that Turkey was not as good as chicken); P.M. I reading in Padewski’s memoirs (a fine spirted book – what a real “spiritual aristocrat” he was & is); The children made pop-corn.; Lense (sic) fell out of my frames while I was sitting and reading and fell in the cuff of my trousers – Hagen obligingly made met me at his shop to fix them.; ; ; ; ; Nov. 24 – 1939 –; A.M. When I tried to draw in the studio, I found I could not focus on the work at arm’s length. Alarmed, I called Dr. Bennett, who, instead of assuring me it could be remedied, said it presented quite a problem, and would I see him at 5:00 P.M. So I had a bad hour or so, until I reasoned out myself, that an extra pair of glasses, with more space for intermediate work, and less for distance, should do the trick. So it proved to be his solution too.; The penalty of age, and perhaps of my excessive work
