was delightful. In an hilarious mood, we decided it could be fun to do a lot of things we did not dare do, such as through a brick thru(sic) a window, or throwing dough-nuts at traffic signals. ; After we had come home, we all went for a walk in the moonlight. Our hilarity still possessed us, and we did a bit of laughing. Aug 31 (Thurs.) –; All day on road scene.Aug Sept. 1 – Arthur working on a “racer” – which called for three rods. He & I to a wholesale place in Buffalo – Thence to get frames, and then to Seneca City line to shop. ; Early P.M. to Krone’s, who loans us an electric drill, & drills and, I drilled holes in the rods for Arthur.; Mid P.M. children report announcement over radio of german [sic] air-raids over Poland. I had deluded myself into thinking war would be averted, and as a consequence it came as a shock to me. Depressed, B & I sought diversion in a movie (One Night of Love – a revival at the Mercury) It was a good show, but did not serve to dispel our gloom. ; All evening a heavy mood of depression weighs us down. My sleep is fitful, and full of ghastly dreams.; Sept. 2 –; A haphazard day –; P.M. sketching trees, & sketches of fire hall.; Late afternoon – a Carl Shaeffer from Toronto, with his wife & two Misses Westermann of Hamburg out to see
