The news from Europe grows worse. It seems incredible. ; Late evening – B & I play badminton, and later we walk in the moonlight – it is a calm beautiful evening, but the mosquitos pursued us without let-up.; The most pleasant memory of my recent excursions to Pennsylvania, is that of the springs issuing from the hillside. I long to make a trip down expressly for the purpose of drinking the delicious water.; ; Aug 26 – (Saturday); All day on a painting of a street scene in Emporiums.; ; Aug 28 – (Monday); To Emporium (for additional studies for the painting I started Saturday); An early start (6:30) the sun just rising – Pleasant to drive in the cool of the morning – little traffic. Below Machias several banks of fog, which made me slow up. Stop at a spring half-way between Smithport and Emporium.; I started in at one to drawing – I made many drawings before I could really get into swing. I must have stayed there an hour and a half. ; I headed for the spot below Driftwood where it has become my habit to eat lunch. I drove a little further on, into to the Butterfly swamp, where I caught a number of butterflies for Sally. Then I went back and at my lunch.
