a myriad forgotten boyhood scenes and impressions – ; Mr. Wild showed us, with a projector, some colored photos he had taken on a recent trip thru(sic) the southwest to California. He showed excellent taste in his choice of subject and composition, and some of them were startling in their reality. One of the finest, in spirit, was one of mountains in shadow speckled with snow shadows, with a fleet of brilliant clouds spotting a vivid blue sky above. For realism, two of the cliff-dwellers home were marvelous. The intensity of sunlight and shadow was superb. ; ; Aug. 22 – (Tues.); To movie – Sally, Arthur & I to see “the Wizard of Oz” – the others to see “Stanley & Swingstone” –; The “Wizard of Oz” was good, and delightful in spots, but it seemed to just fall short of greatness, nor could it be compared to Disney’s “Snow-White” (sic) – the camera, when it comes to inventive fantasy, can never compete with the artist.; ; Aug. 23 – (Wed).; I cannot make up my mind to go to Pennsylvania to sketch.; P.M. The threat of war in Europe has at last got under my skin. A heavy oppression assails me. Badminton with M.A. loosens me up somewhat.; ; Aug 24 – (Thurs.) –; Wakeful all night – fantastic dreams. Pain at times, all of us to movie (getting the car serviced affords us an excuse). B & Arthur to Wizard of Oz; the girls to a Dunn Boyer picture, I to see “Bachelor Mother” – & a mystery play. We all vied with each other in praising a particular show.
