Aug.19 – (Saturday) –; In studio most of the day, putting in a sky in the two bridges picture. At the end of the day, I had to wash most of it out, and felt discouraged about it. However, such things do accomplish something, for you learn what does not belong in a picture. In this case, it is clear now that the sky was very subordinate. ; The devastation of our village proceeds rapidly – the shattering of trees etc is galling. What apathetic beings we are. We all, without exception, deplore the widening of this road, yet none of us even attempt to do anything. Aug 20, (Sunday).; When we came home from church we found the Carlwilds here. They stayed until mid-afternoon – and we enjoyed them a lot. They invited us down in the evening to see a music box Carl had gotten from an old friend.Evening – To Wilds’ –; The music box proved to be well worth the trip if nothing else had (but the Wilds, old & aging are pleasant interesting people) – The “records” were larges thin metal disks – they had 24 of them, all “old favorite songs”, (Swanee River, Verlassen etc) and including some cake-walks, one a tune I heard so much in my boyhood, the names of which I never knew, called I think Smoky-moke Cakewalk (even now I am not sure of the name) – The air calls up
