not enough on hand, so the lady in charge, invited us to rest at their camp in the woods nearby. Countless half-spawn grasshoppers; Wednesday – all of us to see the Fredric March version of “Mr. Jekyll & Mr. Hide (sic)” – It was terribly overdrawn, that in self-defence (sic), I committed the unpardonable offence against good manner, by laughing and giggling, much to the disgust of Martha & Catherine, and Mary Alice, - and no doubt to others. The representation of evil, that of a bandy female displaying her charms without the least subtlety, was so puerile or sophomoric, that it went over into burlesque, and was indeed hilariously funny to me. Whether it is proper to register disapproval of an artist performance a not (sic) is a question not easily answered – in Paris it is common to have hissing at concerts and, operas, or theatrical performance. But in the case of movies, approval or disapproval at a performance has little point, except the immediate one of “letting off steam”.; Thursday – P.M. to the Strykersville country, to return the raspberry crate, buy a few more berries. Chatted awhile with the lady about apples, recalling old varieties that have disappeared. She used an expression that has stuck in my memory as being unique. She referred to a chicken run in the orchard as a “hen-park”; Drive around, but without much pleasure. To the Turk’s Cap Lily patch, dig one stalk, which is seven or eight feet high. Home by the Genesee Rd, which I like for its wildness.
