but found no hepaticas.; ; By noon it was raining.; ; Bertha suggested I send her hepatica to Peggy and get her another later. She also concieved (sic) the idea of making a little box for the hepatica, + covering it with birch bark. We then packed it, and I took it to the Buffalo post-office. Late afternoon make a hexagonal box for Bertha’s hepatica + cover it with bark.; Even – all of us to Berlins for the evening-; April 15, 1939 – (Saturday); A misty day of half-sunshine – warmer. Puttering around most of the day – cleaning art studio.April 16, 1939-; Awake in the early hours; and lie restless, filled with bitter thoughts about my lack of inspiration, or sterility.April 17, 1939 Monday – ; To Cattaraugus Country sketching – ; Part of my plan was to get hepaticas for Bertha’s box – Before I got to Cattaraugus, I saw some along the road and as rain was commencing to fall, I though (sic) I had better get my plants here, rather than walk down the rail-road to the other woods.; It was a moment of pure magic, digging hepaticas with the rain pattering on the dry leaves. Walk up the hill, thru the woods – cordwood – red cup fungus; and the wind swaying the tall spindly trees so that their branches clattered
