December 27, 1938 (Tuesday) – ; [The anguish of self disgust, recorded in my entry of the 16th – seemed to reach a high point about that time, and then to recede – all such struggles I think have but two possible conclusions – to go on to disintegration or madness, or a slow wearing out for the time being – at present I am in a mood that is more tolerant of my weaknesses and therefore, I suffer less. While there is danger in that state of mind I am thankful for it nonethe-less (sic).] ; On Dec. 18 (Sunday evening) B&I take Valentine’s picture to him – His unconcealed delight is a keen pleasure to me.; On Dec. 19 – a letter from Frank (dated the 16th)“Dear Charlie – ; ; The pictures have arrived and I’ve just got to snatch this minute to tell you how thrilling we have all found them. Your letter prepared me in a way for “November Bloom”, but I really think this one of the very rare things you have done. It is exquisite Charlie, and so is the “Low Hanging clouds”, and that gorgeous glowing leaf one, but I might as well go through the list, for there is not one that we are not enthusiastic about. Haven’t a minute’s more time, but blessing on your “little one!”; Saw the Buffalo aggregation yesterday. Said “no” to any exchange, but offered to resell anything they wished to consign to me. Boy!
