I felt the impulse to, and should have, hit him square in the face, but I am slow at that sort of thing, and in fact, have never used my fists since I was a boy (and then not much). But that is the only real answer to such an effrontery - or to such a mentality.
Parked at the Chippewa Market, and thence to buy a few seeds and some garden tools. On the way back I met Schwanekampf bound for lunch at the market restaurant. I joined him, and as I had just come from lunch at the one-arm, I took only coffee. We had a pleasant chat - (at the one-arm I added a new “order-call” to my list- tho I lacked the courage to ask the meaning of it- it was “clam chowder, and hold back the bullets”- as I had heard the customer order crackers, I assume the counter-man meant to omit the croutons.
Home at mid-afternoon- Rechlin in to install the new sink; and I helped with the carrying in. Am I grown material? The very sight of this glorified kitchen utensil gives one a more contented substantial feeling. Our home seems more permanent for its presence!
Evening - take Sally to E. Aurora for the spelling contest semi-finals- (M, A & Martha with us). It is impossible to conceive of a more frightfully boring activity than a “spelling bee” and poor Sally, as so often happens, went down on the simple “isinglass.” It recalled my closest approach to spelling championship in the 5th grade, when I confused the word “wire” with “wier.”
