The first snow drop by the garage.
Pulling aside the leaves in the Hepatica bed, I discovered tiny downy buds.
The first song-sparrow too - and robins.
March 15, 1938 Tues.-
I have set myself the task of working on the Seneca St. House picture, and the weather is against me, clear sunshiny spring-like days, that fill me with longing to be quit of all winter activity. It seems impossible to work indoors, yet I hate to give up the oil.
Yesterday the catalogues of my Pittsburg (sic) show, and letter from O’Connor. I get the urge to go down and see it.
March 20, 1938 Sunday-
Had to give in and go to Pittsburg (sic), leaving Wed. night the 16th.
Long ago, when this exhibit was first planned, I was apprehensive lest its retrospective flavor would induce a depression of spirits in me. That is, would a summary of my life work fill me with the feeling that I had labored futilely? It was a groundless worry. For I felt not the least bit “retrospective” as I looked around at the walls covered with my paintings. True, some were not as good as my memory of them, but there were others, that were better. And my general feeling was that I was surrounded by my past moods, and like the retort of Sibelius who was asked to name his favorite of his compositions, “I liked them all.” I am not, thank God, at the retrospective stage.
