that took us back into the workings again. (2 miles back). I sat on the front end, and as we sped helter skelter down one passageway after another, I became more & more uncomfortable & apprehensive. I had to stoop over, & hold my head down, & I had the feeling that if I raised it an inch, I would have my brains dashed out. Though they claimed we only went 15 miles along, it seemed fifty.
This time, we had the car for our use, and they trained its headlight on my subject - As I sketched, at times, the mine light would go out, leaving us in total darkness except for our cap lights.
Going out this time as we came down a passage way towards the main line, a group of outgoing miners went past in single file, a dramatic sight, they being all black, and revealed only by highlights.
It was good to be above ground again.
Back at the Bungalow, I tried to assemble my sketches and start a drawing but was unable to do so. I gave it up as the early dusk set in, and prepared for supper.
In the evening Mrs. and Mr. Salvati (the genl. supt.) & young Francis came up to see my studies.
